Peak Design - A Design-Driven Brand
Peak Design was founded in 2011 by Peter Dering, who developed the groundbreaking invention, Capture, which allows users to securely mount their camera to the shoulder strap of a backpack, belt or similar. Peter Dering launched Capture on the crowdfunding platform Kickstarter, and the campaign was a massive success. The possibility of carrying one's camera in a safe and comfortable way while still being able to access it in a split second excited photographers worldwide - and continues to do so.
Capture is now available in its 3rd version and remains one of Peak Design's most well-known products, but it is far from the only one. Following the success of Capture, Peak Design launched a range of innovative camera straps - including Leash, Cuff and Slide, which have all gained significant recognition and popularity.
Peak Design has since evolved into a leading brand in "carry solutions" in a broader sense. First, they launched the highly successful "The Everyday Line" - a series of bags for everyday use - followed by "The Travel Line", which includes a highly acclaimed selection of travel bags and packing tools. Today, Peak Design's range also includes innovative mobile accessories such as covers and mounts.
Crowdfunding
Crowdfunding laid the foundation for the launch of Peak Design's first product, Capture, and has helped Peak Design continue to develop new products ever since.
Crowdfunding enables Peak Design to raise capital for the development/production of new products through contributions from customers. In practice, Peak Design presents a new product on the Kickstarter platform and receives contributions from customers ("Backers") who wish to support the project. In return, these Backers receive a form of "Reward", typically in the form of early access to or special offers on the product.
The crowdfunding model has enabled Peak Design to avoid risk-averse external investors, allowing the company to prioritize innovation, challenge the status quo, and take the necessary risks needed to develop groundbreaking products.
Responsibility over Profit
Peak Design has made it a priority to put environmental and social considerations above short-term profit, believing that a responsible company is a sustainable one.
This commitment has led to numerous ambitious sustainability initiatives. Peak Design co-founded the organization Climate Neutral, which works to eliminate CO2 emissions. The company also donates 1% of their revenue to environmental non-profit organizations through their membership of 1% For The Planet. As a Certified B Corporation, Peak Design meets the highest standards of accountability, transparency, and sustainability - both environmentally and socially.
